September and October 2024 Physical Anime Release Guide

September Releases

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 9/3/2024, MSRP $39.98

Not a lot that I can say about this one. Pick it up if you're a fan of the original Gundam timeline.

Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 3 (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 9/3/2024, MSRP $69.98

Somehow, this show has gotten three seasons. if people keep buying these Blu-rays, it will probably get a fourth.

Un-go (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 9/3/2024, MSRP $59.98

Sentai is updating the packanging (and raising the price) of this catalog title. The tech specs of the discs look identical to the 2012 set, so don't expect a huge (or any) upgrade.

Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch from Mercury - Season 1 (Blu-ray Steelbook)

Crunchyroll, 9/10/2024, MSRP $69.98

It starts out like Utena with giant robots, but don't let that fool you. This IS Gundam, albeit with a rare female lead. Pick it up if you liked the show, the metal case will look nice on your shelf and the picture quality will be better than streaming.

Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch from Mercury - Season 2 (Blu-ray Steelbook)

Crunchyroll, 9/10/2024, MSRP $69.98

The second half of The Witch from Mercury. Gods forbid that you actually get a whole two cours series for $70.

Trigun Stampede (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 9/10/2024, MSRP $69.98

Studio Orange's gorgeous reboot/prequel of Trigun gets a home release. It even includes some extras like cast interviews and a making-of video. Likely to be a must-buy.

TRIGUN STAMPEDE (Blu-ray + DVD - Limited Edition)

Crunchyroll, 9/10/2024, MSRP $89.98

Pay an extra $20 to get a pretty box, some tchotchkes, and a second copy of the show on old-school standard definition DVDs that you can lend out to that one friend who still doesn't have a Blu-ray player in 2024.

Spy Classroom (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 9/10/2024, MSRP $79.98

Cute girls doing secret agent things. Pick it up if you liked the show.

Naruto Shippuden - Set 4 (Blu-ray)

Viz, 9/10/2024, MSRP $49.99

Episodes 83-110 of the long-running sequel to the long-running ninja anime. Video is upscaled from a standard def digital master, so don't expect wonders, but the general consensus on the Internet is that these sets look aqequate. Don't expect a full review.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie - Scarlet Bond (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 9/17/2024, MSRP $34.98

Slime got a movie, too.

The Great Cleric (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 9/17/2024, MSRP $69.98

Not much to say about this one. Pick it up if you're an isekai completist.

Ya Boy Kongming! (Blu-ray - Premium Box Set)

Sentai Filmworks, 9/17/2024, MSRP $199.99

For a mere $130 over and above the price of the basic Blu-ray set, you get get a heavy duty box, a small artbook, and a few other trinkets. Horrible value for money, but I'm sure at least 2 people will buy this before it starts showing up in Sentai's seasonal sales for $20.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stone Ocean - Part 2 (Blu-ray Limited Edition)

Viz, 9/17/2024, MSRP $69.99

The second half of the most recent (animated) JoJo installment. A must buy for members of JoJo fandom. Despite being called a limited edition, it seems to be the only version available.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - Season 2 Part 1 (Blu-ray + DVD)

Crunchyroll, 9/24/2024, MSRP $69.98

Toho's gorgeous adaptation of the granddady of all isekai comes back for another season. Pick it up if you like the show.

Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage - Season 2 (Blu-ray + DVD)

Crunchyroll, 9/24/2024, MSRP $69.98

Lots of folks really love this show and its gorgeous storybook-style art. If that includes you, pick this up. At the very least it will look better than streaming.

Captain Harlock (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $69.95

The iconic space opera comes to Blu-ray, albeit only in upscaled form. Still, until somebody comes up with enough cash to convice Toei to go digging in its vaults to do a proper Hd rescan, this is the best the series will look.

Dallos (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $29.95

The first-ever OVA comes to Blu-ray. This is supposedly sourced from the same scan/restoration as the Japanese 40th Anniversary edition, so it should look lovely.

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $59.95

The classic comedy finally comes to Blu-ray, albeit in SD. Given that the show was digitally animated to start with, that's no great loss. Pick it up if you don't already have the show on DVD.

Kiss x Sis TV (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $49.95

One of the original trashy stepsibling ecchi comedies.Guarenteed to make weebs of a certain age feel nostaligic, but an easy pass for everyone else.

Lupin the 3rd: Italian Game (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $24.95

Cut together from a couple TV episodes, this is one mostly for Lupin completists. Everybody else should just get Part Four.

Reborn! Special Fan Disc (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $24.95

Get a quick taste of this long-running series with a selection of fan-favorite episodes plus the never-before-translated OVA.

Tonagura (Blu-ray)

Discotek, 9/24/2024, MSRP $39.95

Another pervy 00s romcom. Buy it for the nostaligia, if that's your thing.

Monster Musume (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 9/24/2024, MSRP $69.98

A bit of fan for the ecchi harem enjoyer. Looks like it comes with a surprisingly robust set of extra content including music videos and mini episodes. Buy it if you liked the show.

The Eminence in Shadow - Season 2 (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 9/24/2024, MSRP $69.98

A fun isekai that's manages to both take itself somewhat seriously AND be incedibly self-aware. Another one to pick up if you liked the show.

Macross Plus (Blu-ray - Ultimate Edition)

Anime Limited, 9/30/2024, MSRP $189.99

A big fancy box set with tchotchkes galore in addition to the two discs containing both the OVA and Theatrical versions plus a host of extras. Nice enough but the $190 price tag puts it well out reach for all but the biggest Macross fans.

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts (Blu-ray)

Anime Limited, 9/30/2024, MSRP $69.99

Not a lot to say about this one. It should be a fine, if barebones, release for all five of this show's superfans.

October Releases

Outbreak Company (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 10/1/2024, MSRP $59.98

Another fairly barebones release, this time of a goofy isekai parody. Pick it up if you like otaku humor.

Otaku no Video (Blu-ray)

AnimEigo, 10/8/2024, MSRP $19.95

This reissue of Gainax's seminal OVA looks like it's mostly a packaging update. If the original pressing is anything to go by, the animated segments (most of the runtime) look fantastic, while the live action interview segments look about as good as something shot on a camcorder in the 80s is capable of looking. There are far worse ways to spend $20. Pick this up if you don't have it already.

Classroom for Heroes (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 10/8/2024, MSRP $69.98

This show didn't make much of an impression when it aired back in Summer 2023, but I'm sure that there's somebody waiting for this out there.

Ouran High School Host Club (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 10/8/2024, MSRP $44.98

The beloved shojo comedy gets yet another re-release, this time to update the packaging in order to make extra sure that everybody knows that Funimation is no more. Pick it up if you somehow don't have this already.

Arcane: League of Legends Season 1 (Blu-ray)

GKids, 10/8/2024, MSRP $44.98

Also not anime, but another Netflix original getting a physical release. This show got a lot of hype and won a bunch of awards, but I bounced off it hard.

Arcane: League of Legends Season 1 (Blu-ray Steelbook LE)

GKids, 10/8/2024, MSRP $54.98

An extra $10 gets you a cool metal tin.

Arcane: League of Legends Season 1 (4K Steelbook LE)

GKids, 10/8/2024, MSRP $59.98

If you want Arcane in 4K, get this edition. It comes in a fancy metal box and includes the show in 4K with both basic HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.

Castlevania: Nocturne Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Viz, 10/8/2024, MSRP $39.99

Not strictly anime, but definitely anime-inspired. It's a rare physical releases of a Netflix exclusive show, so buy it if you're even slightly interested.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Viz, 10/8/2024, MSRP $44.98

Bug Films' impressive but delay-plagued debut shambles onto Blu-ray. Barring any problems with the encode, this is one to pick up

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Season 1 (Blu-ray Limited Edition)

Viz, 10/8/2024, MSRP $69.99

An extra $25 gets you some goodies and a sturdier box. Buy it if you you thiunk it's worth it.

One Piece Collection 35 (Blu-ray + DVD)

Crunchyroll, 10/15/2024, MSRP $39.98

It's One Piece. This volume collects epsiodes 843-866, which first aired back in the second half of 2018. Pick it up if you're a fan and have endless shelf space.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Part 2 (Blu-ray)

Everybody's favorite visually-stunning, historically-grounded Viking anime comes back for more. Pick it up if you're a fan.

Afro Samurai: Resurrection (Blu-ray - Director's Cut)

Crunchyroll, 10/22/2024, MSRP $14.98

Another reissue - this time of a disc that first cme out all the way back in 2009. Probably just a packaging update, but at just $15, probably worth picking up if this is your kind of thing and you don't already have it.

Goblin Slayer Season 2 (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 10/22/2024, MSRP $69.98

The dark and gory goblin-killing anime comes to Blu-ray. Not much to say here as I didn't watch the show when it was airing.

Outlaw Star (Blu-ray)

Crunchyroll, 10/22/2024, MSRP $49.98

Funimation is dead and anything that had there logo on it needs to be replaced with a Crunchyroll-branded version. I'd be shocked if this was anything more than a packaging update and maybe a few tweaks to menu artwork.

Ninja Scroll (Blu-ray Steelbook LE)

Sentai Filmworks, 10/22/2024, MSRP $69.98

One of movies that defined anime in the early 90s comes back into print,at least briefly. This release is likely to be available for a very limited time and appears to be missing the commentary track that featured in earlier printings, but it's also likely the last chance to pick this up in English for a while and at least the $70 price tag is cheaper than eBay.

The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 10/22/2024, MSRP $69.98

Yet another show from last year's wave of otome game isekai. Nothing special here in terms of bonus features. Pick it up if you liked the show when it aired last year.

BLEACH - Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 (Blu-ray Limited Edition)

Viz, 10/22/2024, MSRP $62.99

For an extra $18, Bleach superfans can add an artbook and a fancy box to their collection.

Viz, 10/22/2024, MSRP $44.98

The second to last installment of the long running shonen battler comes to disc. Extras inclues a music video and a trailer. If this is your kind of thing, you've probably alreadt preordered it.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Part 2 (Blu-ray + DVD)

Crunchyroll, 10/29/2024, MSRP $69.98

The latest installment in the stylish dark fantasy comes to physical media at last. Buy this if you grabbed Part 1 already or wait for the complete series to come out in a single package if you're okay with waiting.

Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero (Blu-ray)

Sentai Filmworks, 10/29/2024, MSRP $69.98

Another fantasy comedy. People seemed to like this when it aired. The usual advice applies.
